Cleanings & Preventive Exams

Routine preventive dental care is probably the most important part of great dental hygiene and keeping your smile both beautiful and healthy. Taking the time to have regular check-ups and cleanings can mean less time spent in the dentist’s office and more time doing the things you love.

What Is Preventive Care?

Preventive care is any type of dental care that can help prevent dental decay (cavities). Regular cleanings and examinations help keep your teeth healthy and give our team the opportunity to catch decay, gum disease, and other serious issues as early as possible.

We have two full-time dental hygienists in our office who work with our patients doing regular cleanings. During these cleanings, we also educate you on how to properly care for your teeth with brushing and flossing so that you can keep your mouth as healthy and vibrant as possible. Your hygienist will review your home-care routine and identify any ways that it can be improved so that you can get the most out of it.

During your examination, Dr. Pete will review any imaging and perform a thorough visual examination of your teeth and your soft tissues to make sure that everything is healthy and normal. One of the primary goals of the preventive exam is to catch any problems that do develop as early as possible so that we can treat them promptly before they turn into more serious issues.

Why Is Preventive Care Important?

Preventive care reduces your risk of common dental ailments such as cavities, erosion, and gum disease. On the surface, these issues may not seem like such a huge deal, especially because we can fix them. Recent studies, however, have actually linked oral conditions like gum disease to serious systemic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Plus, the earlier that these issues are found, the easier it is to treat them. We know that you’d much rather have simple, conservative repairs than extensive, complex treatment.

Your preventive screening also includes a screening for oral cancer. When caught early, oral cancer is fairly simple to treat with a good prognosis. But the longer oral cancer goes without detection, the more problematic it becomes. Unfortunately, oral cancer is often missed until it is in its later stages, which is the main reason why it can be such a devastating form of cancer. A preventive dental appointment could quite literally save your life.

How Often Should I Be Seen?

For most people, we recommend a visit to Distinctive Dental Arts every six months for a regular check-up and cleaning. Coming to our office twice a year means that any dental decay or issues can be quickly caught and treated. In some cases, for instance if you have active periodontal disease, we may recommend more frequent visits, but this is a conversation that you will have with Dr. Pete and your hygienist. Regular preventative check-ups are generally short visits, but they can make a huge difference in your dental health.
